Four Ways Your Mattress Can Ruin Your Health

Your mattress is supposed to be your sanctuary at night, and for good reason. Over the course of a week, if all goes well, you'll spend about 56 hours in bed, the equivalent of more than two full days.

But unfortunately, over time, your mattress can become a haven for a lot of things that you don't want to share your evenings with. It can also lose the comfort it once offered, and when that happens, your bed can become a nightmare, making the nights annoying and uncomfortable rather than relaxing.

Before worrying about how to disinfect a mattress, however, you need to know what the signs of a problem are. Here are a few issues to keep in mind!

Dust Mites

Dust mites are so small that most people don't even think about them, but they can cause some serious breathing problems at night. About 10,000 dust mites can live inside the average mattress, and given that your mattress is a warm and humid place, they've got the perfect climate for them to survive on a long-term basis. Let them hang around too long, and you'll find yourself developing issues with your lungs.

Bed Bugs

Just like dust mites, bed bugs are too small to notice. Unlike dust mites, bed bugs attack at night by feeding on the host and then disappearing back into the safety of your mattress. When they strike, they leave red, itchy welts that can provide a major annoyance in the morning. They're not as bad for your health as dust mites, but they're still not pleasant.

Mold

Mold spores are a major breathing hazard and can make your life miserable in a hurry if they're allowed to stick around for long. If you're sensitive to mold spores, you can even develop a major sickness from their presence. Get rid of them as soon as you notice them!

An Aging Mattress

This problem can't be corrected by disinfecting your mattress. Instead, you need to replace your old mattress when it no longer provides the support you need. If there's a dip or lump in your mattress, you're going to find yourself struggling to get any quality sleep, a situation that can't last for long.

When all goes well, there's nothing like hitting your mattress for a restful night's sleep. But if your mattress is a mess and you don't know how to disinfect a mattress, you're going to find your health suffering and your sleep suffering along with it. Make sure that you're keeping your mattress in great shape so you can get quality sleep each night!
